A daughter's rant: ALZHEIMER'S SUCKS!!!

Okay folks, it's time for me to get a little deep.  I'm back in southern Utah.  My sweet mom was released from the hospital last Wednesday, but had to be rushed back to the emergency room on Saturday because she had become so weak and dehydrated...which was why she fell and ended up in the hospital in the first place.  Two words peeps...

ALZHEIMER'S SUCKS!!!

The last few years have been terribly painful watching one of the most independant, articulate and talented woman I've ever known become unable to carry on a conversation and completely dependant on my father to do all the things she once did so efficiently and effortlessly, while working full time and raising a family, mind you.
I have been mourning her loss since the day I realized what was happening to her.  But now, seeing her so frail and fragile, I am mourning all over again.  Before, she was at least mobile and could/would feed herself and maintained a small amount of independance, but now she no longer has that.  She has been restricted to sitting for fear that she may fall and hit her head again and she has to be constantly reminded, almost forced it feels, to drink and eat because she simply doesn't remember she's hungry or thirsty-not a good thing when you live in the desert and it's 115 degrees outside...but hey, at least it's a dry heat.  Wah wah.
Last night I had a chance to leave the kiddos behind for a few hours and sit with my mom at the hospital.  While she slept, I found myself staring at her, and reminiscing about the good old days.  I found myself trying to remember her voice and found myself laughing inside at some of the things she used to say to me.  As a teen she used to always tell me "put some lipstick on".  Yes peeps, back in the day I was a little "granola".  It was my way of rebelling.  My mother was gorgeous and glamorous and stylish.
Once I became a mother, she would always call and ask how everyone was.  She'd say "is everyone well", and then proceed to remind me to "keep the baby's head covered"  and "avoid Wal-mart" if I was planning on venturing out into the {toxic and contaminated} world.  It didn't matter if if was 10 degrees or 110 degrees out.  If a newborn's head was exposed, surely they'd end up with consumption or some deadly plague.  She never really said what covering their head's would protect them from, just that it would keep them from getting sick and that I needed to do it.  She was funny like that.
Even though I may not have totally agreed with this philosophy...I was always maintained more of a "what doesn't kill you makes you stonger" theory, I still found myself covering my babies heads everytime I left the house.  And there is no denying that my mother had mad talent when it came to babies.  She was "the baby whisperer".  She's always loved babies and still does.  Somehow her mind hasn't forgotten that.  Everytime my baby niece comes around my mother light's up and we get a glimpse of the woman she was...is, though it may buried deep inside somewhere now.
I found myself staring at her hands...her amazingly skilled and talented hands now bruised from her fall and showing signs of age.  Her frail hands that now sit quietly folded in her lap once used to create masterpieces.  My mother was an amazing seamstress.  She sewed her own wedding dress back in the fifties and looked like she stepped right out of a fashion magazine.  She was...is, absolutely beautiful.
My mother was also an amazing cook; a skill that, unfortunately, was not passed down to me. I remember her making enchiladas, chicken roll ups and all sorts of delicious casseroles.  Even though she worked full time growing up, she always managed to have something hot and ready for dinner.  I remember her making homemade bread and how the smell would permeate the entire house.  I used to try and steal pieces of the dough to nibble on without getting caught.  Consequently, my mother was also crazy sanitary and if she ever found you with your fingers in the food she'd wack you {gently...most of the time} with whatever was lying nearby...spatula, wooden spoon, yard stick.  I find it hilarious looking back now, because my mother wouldn't harm a fly.  A cockroach, well now, that is another story.
After a few hours of IV infusion, my mother was allowed to go home.  My sister's and I sat with her for awhile longer and could tell she was feeling better.  At one point she was even talking a little and smiling.  It felt for a moment that mom was back and we were all just visiting like we used to do.  When I left mom to go back to my family, I actually felt grateful...grateful to have had this wonderful influence in my life, grateful to have had a chance to see her happy and smiling again and grateful to know that someday I will be able to see her made whole...what a great conversation we will have then.  In the meantime, I will find joy in the time that she still has with us and the wonderful legacy she has left behind.  I am surrounded by amazing women she reared {my sister's} and I take great comfort in that because I can see little glimmers of mom in each of them {that includes you Lindsay}.

Here's a pic of mom in her {handmade} wedding dress.  Aren't my parents the cutest?

Let's Play

Howdy peeps!  Long time, no post.

I have a super fun, super easy project to share with you today, but first let me start from the very beginning.  Oh don't roll your eyes- I'll be brief...ish.

A few weeks ago, I was contacted by DecoArt and asked to try out some of their gloss enamel paint.  I am always game for trying out new products, so I happily consented.

This particular paint comes in several different finishes:  transparent, opaque, glitter, frost, crystal...  It is ideal for use on porcelain and glass and is now available at your local Michael's craft store.

Initially, I'd planned on upcycling an old porcelain platter or lamp base to test the paint out on, but once I started working, I just wasn't feeling it.  Truth be told, I can't paint worth crap!  I mean, I can paint...if it involves a roller or a spray can.  But my artistic abilities stop beyond that.  Needless to say, I was a little intimidated because of my nonexistant decorative painting skills.  I can honestly say now, having completed my project, that this product is perfect for diy'ers/crafters of varying artistic abilities and backgrounds.
{For glass inspiration, click here, DecoArt Glass Paint., DecoArt/Pinterest }

I decided to put the project aside and let things stew for awhile to think about what I wanted to do.  A few days later it donned on me...at 3 o'clock in the morning. {I'm not certain why, but some of my "brightest" ideas [though Studly would beg to differ] come to me during the stills of the night.  Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that it is the only time the house is quiet and I can actually entertain a focused thought.  But whatevs.  Needless to say, I was a little groggy when inspiration struck, but thankful the idea remained when I woke up a few hours later.  And that idea was to create the flippin' coolest "game station" ever.

Okay, stay with me.

Awhile back, whilst meandering through Ikea's dented and dinged section, I came across a cute, little glass top table...similar to this one.  I nabbed it not knowing for sure what I would do with it.

I ended up using the two bases as end tables and stashed the glass table top away out in the garage.

I was relieved to find it still there and that Studly had not tossed out behind my back.  I brought the glass top inside and got to work.

I prepped the surface by wiping it down with a damp cloth then drying it off with a clean, dry, lint free towel {Rubbing alcohol can also be used to prep the work area}.  After the surface was properly clean and dry, I used a dry erase marker to sketch out my "game plan".

When I was satisfied with the design, I went over it with the DecoArt 3D gloss enamel, glass writer.

I strategically painted the squares with some transparent, gloss enamel {in turquoise}.

And that was it.  Game over.

After the paint had cured for 48 hours, the fam got to work testing out the new "game table".

We are a game loving people in these parts, so naturally we are thrilled to have a space designated solely for playing games.  The kids have really taken to it...as you can see.

For the older kids...checkers and chess were a must.

The pieces are "thrifty chic"...pop bottle caps in contrasting colors.

For the younger ones...tic tac toe.

Again, with "thrifty chic" game pieces.  I simply painted old canning lids with chalk paint and drew on the circles and exes with chalk.

I decided to also throw in a built in Connect Four

and dots station for good measure.

Who can resist a rousing game of dots?  I know I can't.

And when everyone is finished playing...the pieces are simply stashed away in the totally recycleable/green game caddy...otherwise know as a cardboard pop bottle carrier painted with chalkboard paint.

Tres chic.  Or should I say...trash eek?

If no one is in the mood for a rousing game of tic tac toe or chess the space can still be used for {insert board game/card game of your choosing}.

So, if you happen to have an old glass topped end table, kitchen table, coffee table, patio table, old window or random piece of extra panel of glass lying around...don't toss it out.  With little effort and little cost you could have your own fabulous game table.  You might be surprised at the hours of fun {and possibly the occasional fist fight} it will provide.  Game on!

Home Again, Home Again.

I'mmmm baaaaaack.

SoCal=great. Coming home to a house that looks like a tornado blew through it, due to a broken dishwasher and a broken clothes washer=not so great.

But whatever. I'm still riding the high from my childess getaway to care that much right now.

I've been to SoCal several times, but never ventured up to Santa Monica before. We spent a lot of time there {since that is where my cute niece will be moving to in a few weeks, to dance with the Los Angeles ballet...where did all this talent come from and why didn't I get any of it?}.
Photo: At the beach in Santa Monica...no kiddies!

Highlights of my trip:
  • eating one of the best bowls of french onion soup that I've ever tasted.
  • witnessing my older sister "wet herself" from laughing so hard.
  • Accidentally flashing everyone at the beach after my heinous attempt at boogie boarding {sorry everyone...I don't think you're ready for this jelly}.
  • removing so much dirt from my nooks and crannies I could fill a child's sand box.
  • navigating the spaghetti bowl and not ending up in Tijuana.
I declare myself officially recouped from the weekend's shenanigans and am ready to bang out some more projects before it's "back to the {school} grind".

I meant to get a post up last week but just didn't end up having the time.

The fam and I headed south to *VEGAS BABY*  last Friday to go watch my gorgeous niece participate in the Miss USA pageant. {Ya, this woman and I share DNA...cah-ray-zee!!! I know}.

Remember her.  She's beautiful and "green"- made 100% out of recyled water bottles.
I can't wait to see how she looks out on the deck in her new home.

And finally, the kiddos will be out of school tomorrow.  I am really hoping to be able to finish up some projects I've started.  I'll be sure to post all about them.

Phew, it's finally starting to feel like summer.  Let the {diy}games begin.

Catch Up

I have been such a slacker. I can't believe that both Halloween and Thanksgiving have come and gone since my last post.

There is a lot to catch up on.

Not too long ago, I received news that a close friend of mine from high school had passed away from breast cancer. It came as quite a shock and was very sad news, as she was only 35 years old. Every time I think about the holiday's, I think of her cute family and I get a lump in my throat. My heart aches for her husband and four, sweet kiddos as they prepare to experience Thanksgiving, Christmas and the New Year without her. I take comfort in knowing that she is in a better place and that she is still watching over her family in spirit and that they will all be together again someday.

Just before Thanksgiving, my sweet grandma passed away. She was 102 years old and lived a wonderful, long life. But somehow her passing still came as a surprise. I think I had begun to believe that she was invincible and would live forever. Needless to say, the Thanksgiving holiday was a bittersweet one for my family and I. Her passing brought together almost all of my immediate family and most of my extended family members. Grandma was always planning parties and get together's...and this past Thanksgiving was her final hoorah I suppose. While I will miss my grandmother daily, again, I know she's in a better place; catching up with her sweetie pie who has been waiting for her for 43 years. I can't think of a sweeter reunion.

Consequently, these recent events have caused me to really think about what's important in my life. And for me that is my family...although throw pillows are at a close second. I made the choice to put my personal interests on hold for awhile as I focused on just being with my family, creating memories that didn't involve a paint brush or power tool. I am finally feeling ready and motivated to get back to the ole blog. It feels good to write again. It's like cheap therapy. I'm just sorry that you all have to be on the receiving end of it.

All that said, I hope you all had a spooktacular Halloween and a gut-bustin' Thanksgiving. I'll be back soon...no really, I will.

Check Ya Later!

All righty peeps. I'm turning the laptop off and getting the heck out of dodge cause...the fam and I are headed out on a family "vacation".

It will be EPIC...once the benadryl kicks in and the {10} hour drive is behind us. From then on it will be fun in the sun & sand in SoCal {a perfectly timed getaway I might add}.

Two days ago, number {5} tripped and fell into the corner of my nightstand which resulted in ONE. EXTREMELY. TRAUMATIC. STITCH... which she somehow managed to yank out by days end.

I know it may seem a little inhumane, but I think that the pediatricians should really consider using dog cones so as to prevent this sort of thing from happening.

Granted they are a little awkward and unsightly, but it's temporary, unlike the scar she will sport on her face...forever. Oh, and just in case you were wondering, her cast had been off approximately {22} hours when the incident occured. And before you go sicking DCFS on me let me just say that I really am an attentive mother, I just have ridiculously, overactive and busy children. I will post testimonials on my behalf when I get back.

On a happier note, the count down is on, which means that in less than {5} hours I can remove all of the padding and protective headware from the kid and we can start our journey injury free...although there is the {10} second walk to the car that has me concerned.

As for you, my dear bloggy peeps, prepare to have your Depends blown off when I get back, cause I plan on putting my renewed vigour and energy to good use...after the kiddie hangover has passed, that is.

Til the, peace out!
