These are a few of my favorite things...and my first W.O.W. Wednesday

I've decided that there are three things I enjoy most when it comes to home decor.

First, I love an awesome find. I love it when I come across things that I have been searching for.  I also love it when I come across things that I never knew I wanted or needed until I find them.  The thrill of the hunt is an addiction for me.  I can't wait to share a couple of recent, awesome finds in some upcoming posts.

Second, I love learning all about interior design tips and tricks.  I don't have a degree in interior design and sometimes I wonder about "the rules".  So, when I post about decorating helps, it is often more for me than anyone else.  I mean, sometimes a girl just has to be reminded of the appropriate height a chandy should be hung at, right?

and...

Third, I love DIY'ing.  Admittedly, I am a bit of a cheapskate.  I have a hard time shelling out money for housy things because the trends are constantly changing, but by doing/making them myself I can save money.  Plus it's kind of empowering to make and do something yourself.  Also, I'm a sucker for a good hack and I am often searching for something to knock off.  What can I say, it gives my life purpose!

I've talked a bit about getting some structure on the blog and think these three points could make for some enlightening posts.  So, my goal will be to try and post three times weekly...emphasis on the try.

Make It Monday...posts will focus on DIY projects of all kinds...furniture redo's, knock-off's, home improvements...

Words of Wisdom Wednesday...posts will center on helpful DIY'ing and decorating ideas and tips.  I may even call upon your wisdom {or opinions} as I occasionally throw out some "hot or not" topics with regards to current design trends.

Fabulous Finds Friday...posts will be dedicated to awesome "finds".  These finds might include:  cool product "finds", fabulous furniture and home decor "finds" , thrift store/yard sale "finds" etc.  Pretty much anything I "find" will be fair game.

And to kick off my new structure...

Today's W.O.W Wednesday...Accessorizing a nightstand!

It is Wednesday, right?  Stud's has been out of town again and my days start to blur and run together when he's gone.

First rule of thumb, the nightstand should be about the same height as the top of the mattress...for obvious reasons.  If it's a couple inches taller or shorter, no biggie.

For the actual accessorizing of the nightstand I utilize the phrase thriller, spiller and filler.  I know this catchy little phrase is more commonly associated with gardening and accessorizing planters, but I think it works here too:  thriller {something tall/vertical}, spiller {something horizontal}, and filler {something that adds color, texture or visual interest}.

Thriller-   add a lighting source, whether it be a lamp, a pendant or wall mounted sconce.  Not only will having a light source right next to the bed eliminate you having to get out of bed to turn off the lights, it adds height to your nightstand vignette.

Spiller-  a stack of books, a small tray or box for jewelry and keys, or interesting figure or horizontal sculpture will ground the space and add horizontal interest.

And finally...

Filler-  a knick knack, framed picture or art piece, or vase of flowers could be used to add texture, color or interest.

Note the use of stacked rocks, a single flower head, some rope and a picture were all used in the photos above as filler.  I love the quirky brass rhinoceros used in the photo below.

Just remember, choose items that will be functional {and fashionable} and that speak to you and reflect who you are and that accessorizing a nightstand is really as easy as 1) thriller 2) spiller 3)filler.

  1. I love this post! I'm in the same boat as you - I'm not an interior designer by trade, so I love learning the "rules" and I've never heard this "thriller/spiller/filler" trick before. Thanks for sharing! I'm going to share this post on my fb page!
